WatchGuard Earns Top Spot in Network World Product Shootout for UTM Firewall Appliances

20 January 2015

WatchGuard® Technologies, a leader in multi-function firewalls, has earned a top spot in Network World's latest Unified Threat Management (UTM) product shootout. Scored based on Installation, Features and Value, WatchGuard's Firebox® T10 received 4.8 out of 5, being recognized for its real-time visibility tool, WatchGuard Dimension™, as well as its exceptional user management interface, and powerful security technologies, like Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) protection. "I can't think of a better way to kick off 2015 than with Network World recognizing our Firebox T10 as one of the best UTM firewall solutions that represents ‘great value for the money.' It was the first to provide enterprise-class UTM security features to SOHO environments, and it delivers unmatched security intelligence and visibility through Dimension," said Dave R. Taylor, vice president of corporate and product strategy at WatchGuard Technologies, noting that this recognition continues a streak of multiple awards the T10 has received worldwide.

The review also goes on to highlight the products solid firewall features and its ability to handle advanced persistent threats (APT) and data loss prevention situations. It notes the number of custom application behavior controls has been significantly enhanced and that WatchGuard offers excellent VPN support for L2TP, SSL (using OpenVPN) and IPsec VPN types.

WatchGuard tied with Check Point for the top spot in the review. Other solutions reviewed included Dell/Sonicwall, Fortinet, Sophos and Calyptix, with Cisco, Juniper and Netgear declining to participate. ForInstallation, Network World reviewed the basic setup of various network interfaces, users and licenses. ForFeatures, they looked at the ability to manage and monitor the box remotely, set up new security policies, review reports, and module integration. Finally for Value, they evaluated overall first year purchase price plus support and software license costs.
